Family Mediation Week: A Better Way Forward for Families

Family Mediation Week runs between 26th and 30th January 2026 and is an important opportunity to highlight the role mediation plays in family law and the positive impact it can have on separating families. At a time when conflict can easily escalate, mediation offers a constructive, child-focused alternative to adversarial legal processes.

Family mediation supports parents and families to resolve issues relating to children, finances, and property through guided conversation rather than confrontation. With the support of an independent mediator, parties are encouraged to communicate more effectively, understand each other’s perspectives, and work towards practical, mutually acceptable outcomes.

For families navigating separation or divorce, the benefits are significant. Mediation can reduce emotional strain, limit the financial costs associated with prolonged disputes, and help preserve relationships—particularly where ongoing co-parenting is required. Most importantly, it places children’s wellbeing at the centre of decision-making, promoting stability and long-term cooperation.

National Mediation Week also serves as a reminder to us family law professionals of the value of early intervention. By informing our clients about mediation at the earliest opportunity, we can help prevent disputes from becoming entrenched and support more sustainable resolutions.

Choosing mediation is not about avoiding legal advice or minimising the seriousness of family breakdown. It is about recognising that families benefit when disputes are resolved with dignity, respect, and a focus on the future.

This National Mediation Week, we at Charles French are reflecting on how we, as professionals, can continue to promote mediation as a first step—helping families move forward with clarity, cooperation, and care.
